Oulton Park Gold Cup - August 24-26th.
Karts have competed at Oulton Park since the early ‘sixties and it was a privilege to be involved with the 60th Anniversary of the Gold Cup at Oulton Park.
Well organised with good facilities, it was matched with good weather all weekend.
It may have been a race car meeting (and there was plenty of good racing) but there was plenty of interest in the thirty karts plus karts we had there over the weekend. These ranged from the 100cc direct drive karts to the 197cc Villiers powered and 250cc Yamaha gearbox karts. Chassis also varied and included a number from the early sixties that are far removed from the designs of today.
We had a portion of the rally track for our demonstration on Sunday and Monday which in the early sessions was very slippery. We were however able to use this to our advantage, as our kart would sideways drift easily around the corners and until throttle control became honed, the 360 degree spins provided good entertainment for the watching public. I am happy to report the only damage being drivers’ pride!
An added bonus the Spitfire (from the battle of Britain Memorial Flight) flying very low was our paddock during its own demonstration- a great view!
We had a good time all weekend and our thanks to the organisers and marshalls. (Photos: Chris Norwood)
